Apple’s first foldable iPhone is officially called Duo
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is officially called the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market.
Apple says the device is designed to redefine the foldable phone experience, combining a larger display with an interface that feels as natural and intuitive as using an iPad.
The iPhone Duo features a 1.4:1 aspect ratio on both displays, while the FaceTime camera is hidden beneath the display. When unfolded, it becomes the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever produced. The design also incorporates an iPhone Air-inspired camera plateau, while the frame is made from titanium.
Apple has redesigned the software experience around the foldable form factor. Key iOS 27 controls are positioned along the side of the device, while the Home Screen dock is arranged vertically. These controls remain in the same position as users move between the two displays, making the transition between screens more seamless.
When opened, the iPhone Duo offers a 7.6-inch Super Retina display. When folded, the outer display measures 5.4 inches. Apple Pencil support is also coming to both displays later this year.
One notable change is the biometric authentication system. Instead of Face ID, the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID.
Apple has optimized its own apps specifically for the Duo’s foldable design. Users can move apps from one display to the other, split the screen, duplicate views, and pair apps together so they can quickly return to a previous multitasking setup.
The flexible design also allows the iPhone Duo to be used in different orientations and positions. It can be placed on a table for hands-free video viewing, folded partially for different viewing angles, or positioned upside down in an open clamshell-style configuration.
Underneath the display, Apple uses a multi-layer lamination design intended to keep the screen flat while improving durability. Apple also claims the display is more resistant to scratches than competing foldable screens, although real-world testing will ultimately determine how well it holds up.
Powering the iPhone Duo is Apple’s A20 Pro chipset, the same processor expected in the iPhone 18 Pro, along with Apple’s C2 modem. The phone is eSIM-only in every region.
Apple says the Duo can deliver up to 24 hours of battery life when both displays are used equally. Battery life is expected to be considerably longer when primarily using the outer display.
For photography, the iPhone Duo features Apple’s 48MP Fusion camera system.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model. Pre-orders open on October 16, with shipments beginning October 23.
