iPhone 18: Release Date, Price, Specs, Camera & Latest Rumors

August 16, 2026 8 Min Read

iPhone 18: Everything We Know So Far

Apple’s iPhone 18 lineup is shaping up to be one of the company’s most unusual iPhone launches in years. Instead of releasing every model at the same time, Apple is rumored to split the lineup across two launch periods.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive in September 2026, alongside Apple’s long-rumored first foldable iPhone which could go under name of iPhone Ultra or iPhone Flip. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a new-generation iPhone Air are reportedly being pushed to spring 2027.

As always, Apple has not officially confirmed these details. The information below is based on reports, analyst claims, supply-chain information, and leaks, so some specifications could change before launch.

iPhone 18: At a Glance

Expected models:

  • iPhone 18
  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone 18e
  • Second-generation iPhone Air

Expected Pro launch: September 2026

Expected standard iPhone 18 launch: Spring 2027

Expected chip: A20 / A20 Pro

Chip manufacturing process: 2nm

Expected Pro display: 6.3-inch

Expected Pro Max display: 6.9-inch

Major rumored upgrades: Smaller Dynamic Island, A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture camera, improved battery life, C2 modem, and new colors.

Design

The iPhone 18 Pro models are not expected to receive a dramatic redesign.

Instead, Apple could refine the design introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro, with the biggest visible change potentially appearing at the top of the display.

Smaller Dynamic Island

One of the most interesting rumors concerns the Dynamic Island.

Apple is reportedly moving some Face ID components underneath the display, allowing the Dynamic Island to become considerably smaller. One report claims the opening could shrink from approximately 20.76mm to 13.49mm.

That would give the iPhone 18 Pro a cleaner display without completely eliminating the Dynamic Island.

The change is expected to come from moving the Face ID flood illuminator under the screen rather than hiding the entire Face ID system beneath the display.

Display

The display sizes are not expected to change significantly.

The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to retain a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max could continue with a 6.9-inch panel.

Apple is also rumored to introduce improvements to its LTPO display technology. Combined with the more efficient A20 Pro chip, these changes could help improve battery life without requiring a dramatically larger display.

A20 and A20 Pro Chip

The biggest technical upgrade could be hidden inside the iPhone 18.

Apple is expected to move from its current 3nm processors to a new 2nm manufacturing process for the A20 family.

For the Pro models, the chip is expected to be called A20 Pro.

Moving to 2nm should allow Apple to increase performance while improving power efficiency. In practical terms, this could mean faster processing, better sustained performance, and longer battery life.

The A20 Pro could also use a new packaging technology designed to improve performance and efficiency further.

For everyday users, the most noticeable improvement may not be benchmark scores. Instead, Apple’s focus could be on giving the iPhone more processing headroom for demanding Apple Intelligence features while consuming less power.

Camera

The camera system could receive one of the most significant upgrades in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Variable Aperture Main Camera

The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera is rumored to gain variable aperture technology.

Unlike a fixed-aperture smartphone camera, a variable-aperture system can adjust how much light reaches the sensor.

This could give the camera greater flexibility in different lighting conditions and provide additional control over depth of field.

In theory, it could make the iPhone camera behave a little more like a traditional dedicated camera, although the real-world benefits will depend heavily on Apple’s implementation.

Telephoto Improvements

Apple is also reportedly working on improvements to the telephoto camera, including a wider aperture.

Reports describe the camera system as one of the major hardware upgrades planned for the iPhone 18 Pro generation.

The camera module itself could become larger, with reports suggesting that the rear camera plateau may become thicker.

Camera Control

The Camera Control button introduced on recent iPhones could also be redesigned.

Rather than retaining all of its current touch-sensitive functionality, Apple is rumored to simplify the control, potentially relying more heavily on pressure sensitivity.

The goal appears to be a camera button that is less prone to accidental activation while still providing quick access to photography controls.

Battery Life

Battery life could be another major focus of the iPhone 18 Pro generation.

Several improvements could work together:

  • More efficient 2nm A20 Pro processor
  • More efficient display technology
  • New C2 modem
  • Potentially larger battery
  • Improved thermal management

The iPhone 18 Pro Max has been rumored to receive a substantially larger battery. One report based on alleged regulatory database information suggested an increase of nearly 10 percent compared with the previous generation.

Other reports have suggested a battery capacity around 5,565mAh, although this specification should be treated cautiously until more reliable evidence emerges.

If the larger battery rumor is accurate, the Pro Max could become one of Apple’s longest-lasting iPhones.

C2 Modem

Apple is continuing its transition away from Qualcomm modems.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to use Apple’s C2 modem, the company’s next-generation cellular modem.

The C2 could provide better efficiency and connectivity while helping Apple reduce its reliance on third-party modem technology.

One particularly interesting rumor claims that the C2 could enable 5G connectivity through satellites in certain circumstances, potentially allowing users to access more than Apple’s existing satellite emergency features.

However, this remains a rumor and should not be considered confirmed.

N2 Networking Chip

The iPhone 18 Pro could also receive Apple’s next-generation N2 wireless chip.

The previous N1 chip brought support for technologies including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Apple is reportedly preparing the N2 as its successor, although specific improvements have not yet been clearly established.

The upgrade could improve wireless performance, reliability, and power efficiency.

Colors

Apple may introduce a new color specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

The most recent rumors point toward a dark cherry finish, potentially accompanied by lighter and more neutral options such as light blue, dark gray, and silver.

If accurate, this would replace some of the colors Apple currently offers on its Pro models.

Of course, color rumors are among the easiest iPhone rumors to change before launch.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Could Be Thicker

Apple’s pursuit of better battery life and larger camera hardware could come with a small trade-off: a thicker phone.

Reports suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could become thicker than its predecessor, partly because of changes to the camera system and battery. One leak claimed the camera plateau could increase by around 2mm.

For people who prefer thinner phones, this may not sound particularly exciting.

For everyone else, however, additional thickness could be worthwhile if it results in significantly better battery life and camera performance.

RAM and Apple Intelligence

There have been conflicting reports regarding the amount of RAM Apple will use in the iPhone 18 lineup.

Some rumors suggest Apple could increase memory in the standard iPhone 18 from the current generation, potentially reaching 9GB or 12GB.

The additional memory would be particularly useful for Apple’s growing collection of on-device AI features.

Apple Intelligence is becoming increasingly demanding, and additional RAM could allow more AI processing to happen locally without constantly relying on cloud servers.

iPhone 18 Release Date

This is where the iPhone 18 lineup gets particularly interesting.

Apple is reportedly planning to split its iPhone releases.

September 2026

The premium models are expected to arrive first:

  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • Apple’s first foldable iPhone

Spring 2027

The remaining models are reportedly expected later:

  • iPhone 18
  • iPhone 18e
  • Second-generation iPhone Air

Recent reporting from The Verge says Apple’s standard iPhone 18 has been pushed into the first quarter of 2027, while Apple’s suppliers have reportedly been preparing for the premium models to launch in fall 2026.

This would represent a major change from Apple’s traditional strategy of launching the main iPhone family together every September.

Price

There is currently no reliable official pricing information for the iPhone 18 lineup.

However, higher component costs could put pressure on Apple’s pricing, particularly for the Pro Max.

One recent estimate suggested that the bill of materials for the iPhone 18 Pro Max could increase substantially, although component costs do not translate directly into the final retail price.

Apple could therefore keep prices unchanged, increase them, or adjust the lineup’s storage tiers.

Until Apple announces the devices, any specific price should be treated as speculation.

What We Expect From the iPhone 18

If the current rumors are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro generation will be more about refinement and technology underneath the surface than a completely new design.

The biggest upgrades could include:

A20 Pro: Apple’s first 2nm iPhone processor.

Smaller Dynamic Island: More Face ID components moving beneath the display.

Variable aperture: A potentially significant upgrade to the main camera.

Better telephoto camera: Wider aperture and other hardware improvements.

Longer battery life: More efficient chips combined with potentially larger batteries.

C2 modem: Apple’s next-generation cellular modem.

N2 chip: A new generation of Apple’s wireless connectivity hardware.

New colors: Including a rumored dark cherry finish.

And then there is the elephant in Apple’s very expensive room: the rumored foldable iPhone.

iPhone 18 vs. iPhone 18 Pro

The biggest difference this year may not simply be specifications.

It could be when you can buy the phone.

Should You Wait for the iPhone 18?

If you are considering an iPhone upgrade in 2026, the answer depends heavily on which model you want.

The iPhone 18 Pro could be worth waiting for if you care about camera hardware, battery life, processing performance, or the smaller Dynamic Island.

The standard iPhone 18 is a different story. If the current rumors are correct, it will not arrive until spring 2027.

That means buyers who want a standard iPhone during Apple’s 2026 fall launch may need to consider an existing model instead.

Final Thoughts

The iPhone 18 lineup could mark a significant change in Apple’s release strategy.

Rather than treating September as the single annual iPhone event, Apple appears to be preparing a two-stage launch. The premium iPhone 18 Pro models could arrive alongside the company’s first foldable iPhone in September 2026, while the standard models follow several months later.

For the Pro models, the most exciting rumors are not necessarily the flashy ones. The combination of a 2nm A20 Pro chip, improved cameras, a smaller Dynamic Island, better wireless hardware, and potentially much longer battery life could make the iPhone 18 Pro a substantial upgrade.

But until Apple officially announces the devices, every specification in this article should be considered a rumor, leak, or report rather than confirmed information.

Apple definitely has the final move.
