Xiaomi Poco X8 Pro Max review

March 18, 2026 12 Min Read

Xiaomi Poco X8 Pro Max review: Great battery life, big compromises

The Poco X8 Pro Max sits atop Poco’s X series, succeeding the X7 Pro and offering, on paper, a true upgrade. Announced on March 17 this year, and available in India starting at 42,999 rupees (approximately $529 for the 512GB version), it targets the high-end segment with particularly attractive technical specifications.

Its major strengths are undeniable: an 8,500 mAh battery (9,000 mAh in India), 100W HyperCharge fast charging, a 6.83-inch AMOLED screen with a maximum brightness of 3,500 nits, and the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s processor. On paper, it’s a battery life champion, capable of outperforming almost all other smartphones on the market.

But here’s the crucial question: do a high-capacity battery and impressive features make this phone a smart buy? Or does the Poco X8 Pro Max sacrifice too many other aspects to achieve battery life supremacy?

Quick verdict

The Poco X8 Pro Max is a phone with exceptional performance. Its battery life is truly best-in-class (nearly 20 hours of Wi-Fi browsing on a single charge) and its screen is bright enough for comfortable use in direct sunlight. The Dimensity 9500s processor delivers excellent performance, and the IP68 water resistance rating is a valuable feature at this price point.

However, the camera system is disappointing: it lacks optical zoom and its ultra-wide-angle lens is underwhelming. The speakers reportedly produce distorted sound, the phone uses USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.0, and it doesn’t offer wireless charging. HyperOS also comes with pre-installed ads and third-party apps that, while uninstallable, are still annoying.

Ideal for: users concerned about battery life, gamers who prioritize longevity, and anyone who is happy with a mediocre camera.

Avoid if: you are passionate about photography, need wireless charging, or want a versatile and balanced device.

Quality of design and construction

The Poco X8 Pro Max measures 162.9 × 77.9 × 8.2 mm and weighs 218 grams. It’s not a lightweight phone, and you’ll feel it in your pocket or during extended one-handed use. But this weight is justified by the enormous battery it houses.

Its build quality is exceptional: an aluminum frame, a glass front protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, and a fiberglass-reinforced plastic back cover. The phone is available in black, white, and blue.

One of the most distinctive design elements is the LED light ring surrounding the camera module. More than just an aesthetic effect, this customizable RGB lighting can serve as a notification alert, pulse to the beat of music, or illuminate during games and calls. It’s a playful touch that adds character without being ostentatious. The black version, in particular, features a matte texture that gives the phone a sleek and elegant look.

With an impressive 94.27% screen-to-body ratio and slim bezels, the phone offers a premium feel that belies its price. Its flat, rather than curved, screen will be appreciated by some users for practical reasons such as improved grip and reduced accidental touches.

Poco has equipped the X8 Pro Max with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor integrated into the screen, a faster and more reliable solution than the optical sensors found on many mid-range phones.

Poco X8 Pro Max Display

The 6.83-inch AMOLED screen is undoubtedly one of the phone’s major strengths. With a resolution of 2772 × 1280 (1.5K) and a pixel density of 447 ppi, it offers sufficient sharpness for all activities, from reading text to watching high-resolution videos.

The refresh rate reaches 120 Hz and can be adaptively adjusted down to 1 Hz, saving battery power when displaying static content. The 480 Hz touch sampling rate (2,560 Hz in Game Turbo mode) offers exceptional responsiveness, particularly beneficial for gaming.

The maximum brightness is 3,500 nits (covering 25% of the display area), with a high brightness (HBM) mode at 2,000 nits and a typical brightness of 800 nits. Several reviewers have confirmed that the screen reaches over 3,500 cd/m² in their tests. In practice: you’ll have no problem using this phone outdoors, even in direct sunlight.

The screen supports 12-bit color depth (68 billion colors), the wide DCI-P3 color gamut, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+. The 3840 Hz PWM dimming is remarkable: high enough to be considered “flicker-free” according to TÜV Rheinland standards, it reduces eye strain for users sensitive to screen flicker.

Who will appreciate this screen the most: gamers looking for smooth images and optimal touch responsiveness; movie buffs and Netflix lovers who will benefit from Dolby Vision and HDR; anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors and needs a bright screen; and users who read for long periods and will appreciate flicker-free PWM dimming.

Poco X8 Pro Max Performance

The Poco X8 Pro Max is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s processor, built on a 3nm process. Its configuration includes one Cortex-X925 core clocked at up to 3.73 GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores clocked at up to 3.3 GHz, and four Cortex-A720 cores clocked at up to 2.4 GHz. Graphics are handled by the Immortalis-G925 MC11 GPU.

The Dimensity 9500s offers high CPU and NPU performance. In 3DMark Wild Life, the phone scored approximately 18,342 points. However, independent tests have revealed some significant limitations.

Under sustained load, the processor frequency drops noticeably. The Dimensity 9500 also suffers from limited memory bandwidth, meaning the UFS 4.1 storage doesn’t reach its full potential. During long gaming sessions, you may experience frame rate drops as the processor heats up and reduces its performance.

With 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM clocked at 9600 Mbps, multitasking should be smooth. The phone should handle everyday tasks (checking social media, switching between apps, web browsing) without any noticeable slowdown.

The ICELOOP 3D cooling system helps with thermal management, but it’s not a miracle solution. The phone will get warm during intensive gaming sessions, but it won’t become uncomfortably hot.

For the vast majority of users, the performance will be more than sufficient. However, if you’re looking for optimal and consistent gaming performance, worthy of a high-end model, it’s important to consider the frequency reduction under heavy load.

Gaming performance

The Dimensity 9500s graphics card with Immortalis-G925 MC11 graphics card positions the X8 Pro Max as a capable gaming device, but not quite as a high-end gaming machine.

This phone should run most graphically demanding games, such as GRID Legends, without any major issues. Its 120Hz screen and high touch sampling rate (up to 2560Hz in Game Turbo mode) provide a responsive gaming experience. The ICELOOP 3D cooling system contributes to optimal thermal management during extended gaming sessions.

However, sustained performance is problematic. Under heavy load, the processor frequency drops significantly, which can lead to frame rate drops during long gaming sessions. Limited memory bandwidth also prevents the UFS 4.1 storage from reaching its full potential.

Gaming Verdict: Ideal for casual and mid-range gaming. Capable of running demanding games, it may, however, struggle with sustained performance on the most resource-intensive titles. Its exceptional battery life is a major advantage for long gaming sessions: you’ll no longer need to search for a charger mid-game.

Poco X8 Pro Max Camera system

This is where the Poco X8 Pro Max faces its biggest challenges.

Main camera

The main camera features a 50-megapixel (1/1.95″) Light Fusion 600 sensor, an f/1.5 aperture, a 6P lens, and optical image stabilization (OIS). Independent tests indicate that it produces beautiful photos with good color balance in bright daylight. OIS improves low-light image quality and video stabilization.

Ultra-wide-angle camera

The 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture is noticeably inferior. Its small 1/4-inch sensor limits image quality. Reviewers describe it as underpowered and prone to aberrations. It’s useful when you need a wider field of view, but don’t expect exceptional image quality.

Telephoto Lens

There’s no telephoto lens. No optical zoom. This is a significant omission at this price point and a major weakness compared to the competition, which offers at least a 2x or 3x optical zoom.

Front camera

The 20MP front camera takes decent selfies, but it sometimes seems to appear slightly too sharp.

Video

The rear camera allows 4K video recording at 30 or 60 frames per second. The front camera is limited to 1080p resolution at 30 or 60 frames per second. Slow-motion mode is available at various resolutions and frame rates.

Camera verdict: The main camera is decent for a mid-range phone, but the lack of optical zoom and the poor quality of the ultra-wide-angle lens make it an overall disappointing camera system. Photography enthusiasts should look at other models. If you mainly share your photos on social media and don’t need zoom, the main camera will be perfectly adequate.

Battery life and charging

This is the main feature of the Poco X8 Pro Max, and rightly so.

The phone is equipped with an 8,500 mAh battery internationally and a 9,000 mAh battery in India. During Wi-Fi browsing tests, it achieved nearly 20 hours of battery life. Independent test states that it can last two and a half days with heavy use, easily exceeding 20% battery by the second day.

The 100W HyperCharge fast charging is equally impressive. Independent tests show the phone charges to 37% in 15 minutes, to 65% in 30 minutes, and reaches a full charge in approximately 52 minutes. Another test recorded a full charge in 56 minutes.

There are a few important points to note. Wireless charging is not supported. The 27W reverse wired charging is convenient for charging accessories like wireless earbuds, but it requires a cable. Furthermore, charging speed depends on charger compatibility: some tests have shown that older 120W Xiaomi adapters did not work properly and required more than three hours for a full charge.

Battery life verdict: Exceptional. This smartphone is among the most enduring on the market. For most users, it easily lasts two days. Even for heavy users, it will easily last a full day. 100W fast charging allows for quick top-ups when needed.

Software and user experience

The Poco X8 Pro Max comes with Android 16 and HyperOS 3. Poco commits to four years of Android updates and six years of security updates. This commitment is competitive in the mid-range segment and ensures the phone’s future-proofing until 2030.

The software experience is typical of Xiaomi: the phone comes with pre-installed third-party apps like Facebook and TikTok. Many of these can be uninstalled, but some system apps can only be disabled. The phone also reportedly contains system-integrated ads, which can be removed but are still annoying.

HyperOS 3 offers various customization options and AI features, although the precise details regarding the latter are not consistently documented. The user interface is fluid and responsive, but software updates are generally delayed compared to Google Pixel devices.

The 12-month warranty offered in some regions is particularly short compared to that of the competition, which offers 2 to 3 years.

Audio and connectivity

The performance of the stereo speakers is mixed. Some reviewers judged them to be merely average, while others described them as impressive, with decent bass and good clarity. However, several sources reported muffled sound and distortion.

Connectivity is more impressive. The phone supports 5G (with broadband coverage), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and NFC. However, it does not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi.

The USB-C port is only USB 2.0, which means slower data transfer speeds than competing devices with USB 3.0 ports. There is no 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Dual SIM support is available with Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM + eSIM (max 2 at a time).

Storage and memory

The Poco X8 Pro Max is available in two configurations: 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, or 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Both models use 9600Mbps LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. The lack of microSD card support means you should carefully consider your storage needs.

The basic 256GB configuration should be sufficient for most users. The 512GB option is worth considering if you store a large number of photos, videos, or games locally.

Price and value

The Poco X8 Pro Max is priced at 42,999 rupees in India for the 12GB + 256GB version and 46,999 rupees for the 12GB + 512GB version. Launch offers include a 3,000 rupee discount via bank cards or trade-in bonuses, bringing the effective price down to 42,999 rupees. The 512GB version is also available for $529 on Amazon.

At this price, you get exceptional battery life, a bright screen, solid performance, and IP68 water resistance. However, you won’t get an excellent camera system, wireless charging, USB 3.0 speed, or high-end audio quality.

The price-to-performance ratio depends entirely on your priorities. If battery life is paramount, this phone offers unparalleled endurance for its price. If you’re looking for a versatile and well-rounded device, the compromises might be significant.

Who is Poco X8 Pro Max for?

Buy it if you:

• Prioritize battery life above all else: this is one of the phones offering the longest battery life available.

• Spend a lot of time outdoors: the 3,500-nit screen offers excellent visibility in bright sunlight.

• Play for long sessions: thanks to its high-capacity battery, you won’t need to recharge it during a session.

• Want IP68 water resistance without paying the price of high-end models.

• Keep your phones for several years: 4 years of operating system updates and 6 years of security updates.

Avoid it if you:

• Care about camera quality, the lack of optical zoom and weak ultra-wide are significant drawbacks.

• Need wireless charging, it’s not supported at all.

• Frequently transfer large files: USB 2.0 speeds are desperately slow.

• Are looking for a versatile and well-balanced phone, this model has undeniable strengths, but also some equally obvious weaknesses.

• Listening to music through the phone’s speakers would be distorting.

• Want a lightweight phone? 218g is quite heavy.

Final verdict

Is the Poco X8 Pro Max worth buying?

The answer depends entirely on what you value in a smartphone.

If you’re the type to constantly worry about battery life, desperately search for a charger in the middle of the afternoon, or want a phone that can easily last two days, the Poco X8 Pro Max is a truly compelling choice. Its battery life is exceptional, its screen is bright and beautiful, its 100W fast charging is impressive, and its IP68 certification gives it real durability at this price.

But if photography is important to you, the camera system will disappoint. The lack of optical zoom, a weak ultra-wide-angle lens, and an overly sharp front-facing camera are significant compromises at this price point. The absence of wireless charging, the limited speed of USB 2.0, and seemingly mediocre speakers are all drawbacks.

The Poco X8 Pro Max is a specialized phone, not an all-rounder. It excels in battery life and display quality, but falls short in areas where many users expect solid performance. As one reviewer pointed out, it’s “a good device for users who prioritize battery life and pure performance,” but “far from being a true rugged smartphone.”

In summary: if battery life is your top priority and average photo performance isn’t a concern, the Poco X8 Pro Max offers excellent value for money. If you’re looking for a versatile phone that performs well across the board, consider alternatives like the Realme 16 Pro or, to save money, opt for the Poco X7 Pro.
